Nawabari is a Japanese logic puzzle published by Nikoli. You divide a grid into rectangles so that each rectangle contains exactly one numbered clue. The number indicates how many of the four edges of that cell are used as rectangle borders, counting both internal rectangle borders and the grid's outer border.

How do Nawabari rules work?

1) Divide the grid into rectangles by drawing borders between cells. 2) Each rectangle must contain exactly one numbered cell. 3) The number equals the count of that cell's edges that are borders (0 to 4). 4) Every cell must be in exactly one rectangle. A clue of 4 means the cell is isolated (1x1 rectangle). A clue of 0 means the cell is interior to its rectangle.

How is Nawabari different from Shikaku?

In Shikaku, the number equals the rectangle's area (width times height). In Nawabari, the number equals the count of the clue cell's edges that are borders. This creates very different solving logic — a Nawabari clue of 3 means three of the four edges of that cell are borders, regardless of the rectangle's total size.

How to Play Nawabari

1Goal: Divide the grid into rectangles by drawing borders between cells. Every cell must belong to exactly one rectangle.

2One clue per rectangle: Each rectangle must contain exactly one numbered cell. No rectangle can have zero or multiple clues.

3Clue meaning: The number tells how many of the clue cell's four edges are borders (including the grid's outer edge). A 4 means the cell is an isolated 1x1. A 0 means no edges are borders.

4Drawing borders: Click on the edge between two cells to toggle a border line. The grid's outer edge is always a border. Borders must form rectangles only — no L-shapes.

5Win: All borders form valid rectangles, each with one clue, and all clue values match their border-edge counts. Use Hints if stuck!
