What Is Hangman?
Hangman is the classic word-guessing game that's been played on chalkboards and notebooks for over a century. One player thinks of a secret word and reveals how many letters it has (e.g. _ _ _ _ _). The other player guesses one letter at a time. Correct guesses fill in the blanks. Wrong guesses draw another body part on the gallows. You have 6 wrong guesses — solve the word before the figure is complete or you lose the round.
Hangman is one of the few games that's been played continuously since the 1890s — by grandparents in pencil-and-paper form, by kids in classrooms, and now by anyone with a browser. It belongs to the same "calm vocabulary" family as Wordscapes, Sudoku, and Wordle.
How to Play Hangman
If you learned Hangman in school, you already know the rules. Here's the browser version:
- Pick a category — Animals, Food, Countries, Sports, Movies, Science, Music, Tech, Nature, or General.
- Pick a difficulty — 20 levels from easy 4-letter words to expert 12-letter words.
- Guess letters — tap any letter on the keyboard. If it's in the word, it fills in. If not, another body part is drawn.
- Use the hint — the category is shown at the start, and a definition appears after a few wrong guesses.
- Win or lose — solve the word before 6 wrong guesses to win. After winning, the definition is revealed for vocabulary learning.
- Daily challenge — once per day, a special word with bonus scoring.

Tips for Winning More Hangman Rounds
- Start with common vowels. A, E, I, O, U. This is Hangman 101 — vowels appear in almost every English word, and they reveal the word's structure fastest.
- Then common consonants. After vowels, guess T, N, R, S, L — these are the most common consonants in English.
- Look at the letter pattern. Once you've guessed a few vowels, the word's pattern is often obvious:
_ A _ E _ might be PAPER, LATER, EATER, etc. - Use the category hint. If the category is "Animals" and you see
_ I _ _ _, you're looking at TIGER, RIVER (no, that's not an animal...), HIPPO, etc. - Don't waste guesses on rare letters. Q, X, Z, J are usually last priorities — they're expensive to guess wrong.
- Watch the body count. After 4 wrong guesses you only have 2 left — switch to high-probability letters.
- Think about bigrams. TH, HE, IN, ER, AN — common letter pairs. If you've guessed T and see it could fit, E or H is a smart next guess.
- Don't be afraid to skip. If you're truly stuck after 4 wrong guesses, the "next" button loses you one round but saves your streak.
Hangman vs. Other Word Browser Games
How does Hangman compare to other word games on GameZipper?
| Game | Skill Type | Pace | Best For |
| Hangman | Vocabulary + deduction | Slow & thoughtful | Word learning, classroom play |
| Wordscapes | Letter combination | Medium | Vocabulary expansion |
| Wordle | Pattern matching | Quick daily | Daily mental warm-up |
| Crossword | Vocabulary + clues | Slow & thoughtful | Morning coffee time |
| Word Search | Pattern scanning | Relaxed | Casual reading breaks |
Hangman is unique because it's pure deduction with no time pressure. Wordle gives you 6 guesses total. Crossword requires you to already know the answers. Word Search just asks you to spot letters. Hangman lets you reason your way to the answer one letter at a time — and you can take as long as you want.
