What Is Connect 4?
Connect 4 (also known as Four in a Row, Drop Disc, or Plot Four) is a two-player strategy game where players take turns dropping colored discs into a vertical 7-column, 6-row grid. The first player to connect four discs in a row — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — wins.
First released by Milton Bradley in 1974, Connect 4 has become one of the world's most popular strategy games. It's simple enough for a 6-year-old to learn, yet deep enough that mathematicians have studied it extensively. In fact, with perfect play, the first player can always force a win!
How to Play Connect 4
- Choose your color: One player is red, the other is yellow
- Take turns dropping discs: Click or tap a column to drop your disc into the lowest available spot
- Connect four: Get four of your discs in a row — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally
- Block your opponent: Watch for their potential connections and block them before they complete four
- Win or draw: If the board fills up without either player connecting four, it's a draw
Connect 4 Strategy Tips
💡 Golden Rule: Control the center column. More winning lines pass through the center than any other column.
- Think two moves ahead: Plan your move AND your opponent's likely response
- Create forks: Set up situations where you threaten two different four-in-a-rows at once — your opponent can only block one
- Play odd/even strategy: As the first player, focus on odd-numbered rows. As second player, target even rows
- Force vertical threats: Building three in a column forces your opponent to block, giving you tempo control
- Don't neglect diagonals: Most beginners focus on horizontal and vertical — diagonal threats often go unnoticed until it's too late
Connect 4 Variations
While the classic 7×6 grid is the standard, there are many fun variations:
- Pop Out: Players can remove their own bottom disc to shift the column
- 5 in a Row: Played on a larger 8×8 or 9×7 grid
- 3D Connect 4: A 4×4×4 cube where you can connect four in any direction including depth
- Gravity Connect: Discs fall to the lowest point, but you can rotate the board
